Overview

The AWLN 8th Intergenerational Retreat (IGR 8) is the African Women Leaders Network's signature platform designed to connect emerging and established African women leaders. This flagship gathering aims to strengthen women’s leadership in transforming the continent, aligning with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. More than a conventional meeting, IGR 8 serves as a launchpad for leadership development. It provides a unique space where mentorship, structured dialogue, and cross-generational exchanges translate into enhanced leadership capacity and the formation of lasting networks across diverse countries, sectors, and generations. The retreat focuses on empowering young women leaders from the African continent and the Diaspora who have demonstrated tangible impact within their communities. Forty selected participants will benefit from a fully sponsored experience, gaining invaluable skills, connections, and support to further their contributions to Africa's future. Participants are expected to actively engage in all aspects of the retreat, contributing their knowledge and perspectives. Beyond the event, they are encouraged to act as AWLN ambassadors, implementing initiatives that advance women's leadership and gender equality, and continuing their engagement within the AWLN network through mentorship and collaboration.

Eligibility

Applicants must be young African women leaders, either from the African continent or the Diaspora, who have demonstrated measurable or recognized impact within their communities. Eligible candidates must be aged between 18 and 45 years. They should also be innovators or active contributors within one of AWLN’s six pillars: Peace and Security; Governance and Political Participation (GPP); Financial Inclusion, Economic Development, Natural Resources and Mining; Agriculture, Rural Economy and Land; Social Mobilisation; or Youth and Emerging Leaders.

Judging criteria

Demonstrated measurable or recognized impact within their community

Innovation or active contribution within one of AWLN's six pillars

Willingness to actively engage in all sessions, discussions, and collaborative activities

Ability to share knowledge, experiences, and perspectives to enrich intergenerational dialogue

Commitment to building meaningful connections and fostering collaboration

Potential to act as an ambassador of AWLN by promoting its values and mission

Commitment to translating learning into action by implementing or strengthening initiatives after the Retreat

Willingness to contribute to the AWLN network beyond the event through continued engagement, mentorship, knowledge sharing, and collaboration
