The Global Young Academy (GYA) is accepting applications for its 2027 cohort, seeking young, independent scholars who demonstrate high-level research excellence and a passion for societal impact. The GYA is a global organization that values diversity, encouraging applications from all qualified candidates, including women, minority groups, and individuals from various disciplines such as natural, physical, and social sciences, as well as arts and humanities. Individuals working in government, industry, and non-governmental sectors are also welcome to apply. While the GYA does not provide stipends to members, it aims to offer financial support for travel co-funding for Annual General Meetings and seed funding for GYA-internal projects, depending on available funds. These projects align with the GYA's four thematic areas, fostering international and interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting science, engaging in policy debate, and supporting young scholars globally. Applicants are required to have a PhD or an equivalent degree and be in the early to middle years of their independent careers. Specific age and PhD obtainment criteria apply, with exceptions requiring detailed justification. Membership in the GYA is active, with members expected to contribute a minimum of 6 hours per month to the organization’s programs, which include science-for-policy activities, science outreach, science diplomacy, and collaboration with other young academies. Successful applicants are expected to attend the next Annual General Meeting, scheduled for June 21–25, 2027, in Indonesia. The application process requires an online submission including a CV (maximum 4 pages) and at least one, but no more than three, letters of support from referees familiar with the applicant's research career and societal engagement.
Open to all scholars working in any research-based discipline, including the natural, physical and social sciences, as well as the arts and humanities. Applicants working in government, industry, and non-governmental sectors are also welcome. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of excellence in their discipline, ascertained by a proven track record and expected future achievements. Moreover, applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to making a difference in society. A PhD or an equivalent degree is a requirement for applicants. Applicants should provide evidence of interest or experience in one or more of the GYA's program areas (supporting young scholars, promoting science to a broad audience, engaging in policy debate, fostering international and interdisciplinary collaboration). Applicants should be in the early to middle years of their independent careers. Applicants born in or after 1986 and holding a PhD are eligible without any restrictions. Applicants born before 1986 must have obtained their PhD in 2019 or later. Applicants born before 1986 with a PhD obtained before 2019 must submit a detailed justification of why they should be considered. Each GYA member is encouraged to attend the GYA Annual General Meeting each year and is expected to actively contribute a minimum of 6 hours per month to one or more of the organisation’s programmes (projects and committees).
