The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the international research college of the University of Freiburg. It is dedicated to bringing together scholars from Freiburg and around the world, fostering a vibrant community of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. FRIAS provides temporary fellowships that enable researchers to fully dedicate themselves to their projects, supported by exceptional resources. For the academic year 2027/2028, FRIAS is extending individual Senior Fellowships to researchers of all nationalities and disciplines, whether they are based in Freiburg, Germany, or internationally. This program is designed to offer access to the extensive resources, networks, and academic community of the University of Freiburg. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to enhance their research through new perspectives and collaborative opportunities. The fellowship provides either a fellowship contract with the University of Freiburg or other compensation, along with a contribution towards research costs and travel expenses for inbound and outbound journeys, where applicable. The selection process for these fellowships is highly competitive and strictly merit-based, targeting individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality. The expected success rate is approximately 5% of eligible applications. Applications are welcomed from any discipline that can be supported at the University of Freiburg.
Applicants must hold a completed doctoral degree plus a minimum of eight years of post-doctoral experience. Applicants must have 10 peer-reviewed publications since January 1, 2020. Applicants must have at least six months’ research or study experience at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree by the time of application. Fellowships will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process (expected success rate: ~5% of eligible applications). Applications are welcome from any discipline that can be supported at the University of Freiburg.
