Hackathon 2026 Challenge

Overview

The Tech Hub Africa Hackathon 2026 is a youth-led innovation program hosted on DoraHacks.io, aiming to address persistent infrastructure and environmental challenges in Ghana and across Africa. The hackathon invites students, aspiring developers, and young visionaries to develop impactful solutions that drive real-world change. The challenge focuses on three critical pillars: Electricity Efficiency, Traffic Mitigation, and Pollution Control. Participants are encouraged to build tools that optimize energy grids, reduce waste, ease congestion, and create cleaner urban environments. The program emphasizes creating practical solutions with real-world applicability over theoretical concepts. The hackathon is structured in three phases: Preparation & Onboarding, Hacking & Mentorship, and Judging & Winners Announcement. It includes educational webinars, ideation workshops, technical mentorship, and a pitch finale for top finalists. The competition seeks solutions that are technically sound, innovative, and scalable for the Ghanaian market.

What to build

Participants must build technological and social innovations across three tracks: 1. Electricity Efficiency: Develop solutions to optimize power consumption, reduce waste, and improve grid reliability. This includes smart metering & IoT, P2P energy trading, AI for grid prediction, and renewable integration solutions. 2. Traffic Mitigation: Design digital or physical solutions to ease vehicle flow in high-density urban areas. This includes adaptive traffic control, smart public transit apps, carpooling/ride-sharing platforms, and digital route optimization. 3. Pollution Control: Create projects addressing environmental hazards, focusing on waste management, air quality, and water sanitation. This includes waste-to-value platforms, air & noise quality mapping, smart drainage monitoring, and sustainable packaging solutions.

Eligibility

The hackathon is open to developers, students, startups, and innovators across Africa and the world. Participants must be aged 15-25 years.

How to enter

1. Register as a Hacker on DoraHacks.io.
2. Set up your profile and find teammates if desired.
3. Attend educational series and ideation workshops.
4. Build your project during the hacking period.
5. Submit your project, including a pre-recorded demo video and GitHub repository, via DoraHacks by the deadline.

Judging criteria

• Design & Technological Implementation (5 Points): Core functionality, implementability in Ghana, user experience (UI/UX).
• Technical Complexity (5 Points): Innovation in build, problem-solving elegance, code quality (documented, clean, professional).
• Potential Impact (5 Points): Significance of impact on end-users in Ghana, scalability, contribution to Tech Hub Africa's mission.
• Quality & Innovation of the Idea (5 Points): Originality, vision, "wow" factor.
