Overview

The International Uranium Film Festival, also known as The Atomic Age Cinema Fest, is a competitive festival that invites filmmakers globally to submit their work for its 2027 edition. Founded in 2010, the festival focuses on films exploring the multifaceted themes of nuclear power, radioactivity, and the use of radioactive elements like uranium. This includes topics ranging from historical events like Hiroshima and Fukushima, nuclear disasters such as Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, uranium mining, the use of depleted uranium weapons, nuclear waste, and radioactive contamination, to nuclear medicine and biographies of nuclear scientists. The festival aims to highlight these complex issues through the medium of film. The festival accepts feature-length and short films across all genres, including Documentary, Fiction, Experimental, Animation, Comedy, Romance, Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction, Suspense, and Student productions. It also welcomes educational and image films that shed light on nuclear science, nuclear power, and radioactivity. There is no restriction on the production date of the films, meaning both new and older productions are eligible for submission. The festival is competitive, and the best films are recognized with the prestigious Uranium Film Festival trophy. Over the years, the festival has expanded significantly, hosting more than 70 events in over 40 cities across seven countries, including Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Jordan, Portugal, and the USA. This international reach allows a selection of the best films to travel to various cities and countries, promoting wider engagement with the critical themes presented. The upcoming 2027 edition is scheduled to take place at the Cinematheque of the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

What to build

Filmmakers must create and submit a feature-length or short film (Documentary, Fiction, Experimental, Animation, Comedy, Romance, Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction, Suspense, Student productions, educational, or image films) that explores themes related to nuclear power, radioactivity, and the use of radioactive elements, including uranium. Topics can include nuclear war, atomic bomb tests, nuclear disasters (e.g., Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima), uranium mining, depleted uranium weapons, nuclear waste, radioactive contamination, nuclear medicine, and films about nuclear scientists.

Eligibility

Filmmakers worldwide are invited to submit their work. Films can be feature-length or short and belong to any genre including Documentary, Fiction, Experimental, Animation, Comedy, Romance, Horror, Thriller, Science Fiction, Suspense, Student productions, educational, or image films. It is not mandatory for films to be new productions; films produced at any time are accepted.

How to enter

1. Prepare your film, ensuring it addresses themes of nuclear power, radioactivity, and radioactive elements.
2. Submit your film for consideration. An entry fee applies, which varies based on submission type and date.
3. Submit before September 30, 2026, for early submission rates.
4. Be aware that submissions after October 31, 2026, incur higher late submission fees.
