Overview

The Linha do Horizonte challenge, part of ARCH CHALLENGE, focuses on the unique architectural opportunities in Cape Verde, a nation at the intersection of Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic. With a rich cultural identity shaped by centuries of migration and exchange, Cape Verde is now undergoing significant transformation driven by infrastructure development, tourism, and international investment. This context emphasizes the importance of sustainable and resilient architectural models. The competition specifically targets Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Santiago island. Founded in the 15th century as Ribeira Grande, it was the first urban settlement in the archipelago and a crucial hub along historic Atlantic trade routes. The site's historical significance, characterized by its ruins, forts, stone structures, and intimate relationship with the ocean, presents a deeply fragile yet profound identity. ARCH CHALLENGE aims to leverage these real-world conditions – specific sites, existing constraints, and significant potential – where factors like geography, climate, memory, and future growth are integral to guiding the architectural project from its inception. The goal is to design structures that are deeply rooted in their environment rather than merely occupying it.

What to build

Participants must propose a high-end residential complex comprising approximately 10 to 18 housing units. These units can be independent villas, grouped apartments, or a combination of both, ranging from studio (T0) to three-bedroom (T3) typologies. The buildings should be designed to a maximum of two levels, adhering to principles of low density and minimal visual impact, integrating with the landscape rather than dominating it.
