UK Chemistry Olympiad

Overview

The UK Chemistry Olympiad (UKChO) is a prestigious annual competition organized by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) designed for students aged 16 to 19. It aims to challenge and inspire young chemists by testing their problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills beyond the standard classroom curriculum. The competition consists of multiple rounds, starting with a written test. Successful participants advance through a selection process that includes a weekend-long training and assessment program. This rigorous pathway culminates in the selection of four top students who will undergo intensive training to represent the UK at the International Chemistry Olympiad. The competition provides an opportunity for students to engage with real-world chemistry problems and develop advanced scientific skills. While participation is free for schools in the British Isles, international schools in specific regions or those following British/IB curricula may also participate, some with a fee.

Eligibility

Students in secondary schools and colleges in the British Isles are recommended for participation, particularly those aged 16 and above. Schools in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam can enter Round 1 through ASDAN China. British international schools outside these specific countries can participate in Round 1 if they teach in English and follow a British curriculum (iGCSE/A Level) or IB programme. The competition is free for schools in the British Isles. There is a fee for British international schools outside the specified Asian countries, and ASDAN China handles fees for the countries it manages.

How to enter

1. Schools must register first.
2. Students then register through their respective schools.

Submission requirements

• The Round 1 exam is 2 hours long.
• The exam must be taken at school under standard exam conditions, supervised by a responsible invigilator.
• Students who normally receive extra time for exams may utilize it.
