Stony Brook University offers an advanced graduate certificate in Bilingual Education, fully online. This 16-credit program is designed for fluent bilingual speakers who already hold a relevant New York State Education Department (NYSED) certificate. It equips teachers certified in any subject area with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively teach in bilingual settings within New York State schools. The program also offers a pathway for speech-language pathologists. Courses from this certificate can be applied towards master's degrees in Liberal Studies or Speech-Language Pathology at Stony Brook.
The program requires the completion of 5 courses totaling 16 credits. There are two pathways available: one for teachers and one for speech-language pathologists. Course descriptions can be found in the SPD Bulletin and the Graduate Catalog.
This program leads to the NYSED Bilingual Education Extension Annotation, enhancing your ability to teach in bilingual settings. The credits earned may articulate with master's degree programs, offering further study options.
For languages other than Spanish, please contact the Program Director to discuss potential pathways. Transcripts should be sent electronically from the issuing institution directly to spd_transcripts@stonybrook.edu. Do not send application materials to the Graduate School.
The program offers a reduced rate due to partnerships with Teacher Centers.
The program is registered by the New York State Education Department.
