This Master's level course introduces students to contemporary Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods for modeling natural language and the meaning it conveys. You will explore different approaches to representing the meaning of words, sentences, and conversations using computational techniques. The course covers both traditional rule-based methods and modern data-driven approaches learned through machine learning. We will critically compare these methods, examine how computational inferences and reasoning can be performed with them, and discuss their applications in various language technology tasks. Topics include natural language meaning, inference, ambiguity, similarity, formal rule-based representations, distributional vector-space models, and machine learning-based word embeddings and language models.

Assessment of qualifications is based on the number of credits from previous university studies and the relevance of your academic background to the course prerequisites. Candidates are required to complete and upload a summary sheet detailing their qualifications to the admissions system. Selection is based on the number of credits from previous university studies, with a maximum of 165 credits considered.
Students from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are generally required to pay tuition fees. An application fee of 900 SEK also applies for these students.
