Stony Brook University offers both Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Data Science. This interdisciplinary program is a collaboration between the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS) and the Department of Computer Science (CS), both housed within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The program provides rigorous training in data science, covering essential areas such as statistical analysis, big data management and analysis, and fundamental computing principles. Students will gain expertise in analyzing large datasets, developing statistical models, and understanding the underlying computational theories. The curriculum is designed to equip graduates with the skills needed to tackle complex data challenges in various industries and research fields.
Curriculum
The MS program requires 36 credits (12 courses), including 10 core courses and 2 electives. The PhD program builds on the MS core curriculum, requiring additional electives and thesis research. Students can complete the MS program in 3 to 4 semesters.

Entry requirements
Bachelor's DegreeIn computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, a natural science, engineering, applied science, or social science with a strong mathematics and programming background. Fluency in Calculus and at least one programming language is expected. Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall and in pertinent fields.
TOEFL, IELTS, or DuolingoMinimum scores can be found on the Graduate School's website. (Note: Duolingo is not accepted after Spring 2025)
Applicants with degrees from English-speaking institutions or those who served as Teaching Assistants in English-instruction environments may be exempt from English proficiency tests. GRE is not required for Fall 2025 applications but can be submitted.
