Explore fundamental questions about learning and the role of education in society, from early childhood through to young adulthood. This BA (Hons) in Education Studies develops critical thinking and analytical skills by examining education through the lenses of psychology, sociology, history, and philosophy. You will investigate diverse topics, from historical educational practices to contemporary issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice. The program encourages exploration of different educational settings and philosophies, including forest schools and outdoor learning. Students have the opportunity to gain practical experience through annual work placements tailored to their career interests and can even participate in optional field trips to Europe or a study abroad year at a partner university in the USA or Europe. A unique feature is the option to switch to a Special Educational Needs, Disability, and Inclusion (SENDI) pathway at the end of the first year.
Curriculum
The course is structured over three years, with an optional year abroad. Each year includes compulsory and optional modules, work placements, and field trips. Teaching is primarily face-to-face, with approximately 12 hours of contact time per week in the first year, reducing to 8 hours in subsequent years. The total annual workload is around 1,200 hours.
