This English as an Additional Language (EAL) program is designed to help you improve your English communication skills for living, working, and pursuing further education in Canada. With a focus on developing essential language abilities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, the program also includes modules on grammar, numeracy, pronunciation, presentation skills, and computer literacy. Students benefit from small class sizes and available tutoring support, with various specialized modules to enhance specific skills. The program is delivered in a hybrid format, combining online and in-person learning. The EAL program offers several levels, from CLB 5 up to CLB 8. Upon successful completion of CLB 8 in all four skill areas, graduates are eligible to apply for other programs at Columbia College, sometimes without further English assessment. The program may be eligible for funding from the Government of Alberta for full-time or part-time studies.

Columbia College EAL Assessment
Calgary Language Assessment & Referral Centre (CLARC) Evaluation
Permanent Residents or Convention Refugees are encouraged to take the LINC Program before applying for the EAL Program. Permanent Residents are required to present a LINC certificate with CLB 4 in listening/speaking when they apply for citizenship.

How to apply
1. Review Entry RequirementsEnsure you meet the minimum CLB 3 requirement and have access to a digital device and internet connection. For Permanent Residents, consider completing the LINC Program first.
2. Take an AssessmentYou may be evaluated by the Calgary Language Assessment & Referral Centre (CLARC) or take a Columbia College EAL Assessment to determine your placement.
3. Submit ApplicationApply online through the Columbia College admissions portal.
4. Prepare DocumentsGather any required supporting documents, such as identification and previous academic records (if applicable).
5. Receive Admission OfferOnce your application is reviewed and you meet the criteria, you will receive an admission offer.
6. EnrollFollow the instructions provided with your offer to complete your enrollment.
