The Master of Science (MS) in Environmental Chemistry and Technology program provides advanced instruction and research training focused on applying chemical principles to environmental systems. Graduates are prepared for careers in research, teaching, resource management, environmental consulting, and industrial roles. The program covers areas such as developing advanced technologies for air and water purification, energy storage, alternative energy, pollution control, and remediation of soil and sediments. This interdisciplinary program allows students to tailor their studies to their interests through specialized coursework and electives, with areas of specialization including aquatic chemistry, air pollution chemistry, terrestrial chemistry, and chemical/biotechnology development. The faculty comprises experts from various departments, offering a broad range of expertise. The program boasts extensive facilities, including over 10,000 square feet of dedicated laboratory and office space in the Water Science and Engineering Laboratory (WSEL). These facilities are equipped for research in areas like trace element analysis, air pollution chemistry, and environmental technology. Students also gain access to laboratories across multiple departments and research centers on the UW–Madison campus.

You need a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 on your undergraduate degree's last 60 hours or a master's degree with a 3.00 GPA. A strong foundation in general, organic, physical, and analytical chemistry is also required, along with at least 6 credits in natural sciences or engineering.
