This 12-month Graduate Diploma in Midwifery is designed for registered nurses who want to transition into midwifery practice or advance their careers. The program focuses on contemporary Australian midwifery, equipping you with advanced skills in continuity of care, advocacy, collaborative maternity care, and legal accountability. You will combine theoretical learning through lectures, workshops, and simulation labs with essential hands-on clinical placements in respected maternity services across Victoria. Upon graduation, you will be eligible to apply for registration as a midwife. This diploma also serves as a pathway to further study, such as La Trobe's Master of Midwifery Practice. The qualification is recognised at AQF Level 8.
Entry is competitive. All applicants must submit a resume and a personal statement. Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place.
Indicative fees are based on 2026 data and are subject to change for 2027. 120 credit points represent a full-time study load for one year. Standard full fee places are not subsidised by the government and can be paid upfront or deferred with FEE-HELP. Commonwealth Supported Places have a portion of fees paid by the Australian Government, with the total amount depending on the subjects studied.
The qualification is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 8 - Graduate Diploma.
Applicants must hold current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse, have an Australian bachelor's degree or equivalent, and at least one year of post-registration acute medical/surgical nursing experience. Securing a clinical placement at an approved midwifery agency is also mandatory.
The indicative tuition fee for international students is $32,400 per 120 credit points, which represents a full-time annual load. These fees are based on 2026 data and may change for 2027.
