Stony Brook University's Department of Art offers graduate programs in Art History & Criticism and Studio Art within an interdisciplinary environment that fosters experimentation and innovation. Our faculty comprises internationally recognized scholars, artists, art historians, curators, and educators. Graduates from these programs pursue careers as historians, writers, curators, artists, researchers, educators, consultants, and arts professionals in museums, galleries, and various arts institutions. The PhD program in Art History & Criticism specializes in modern and contemporary art, offering a dynamic curriculum that examines art history as an evolving, interdisciplinary field with strengths in global modernisms, media, technology, and visual culture. The MA in Art History & Criticism also focuses on modern and contemporary art, providing a similar interdisciplinary approach. The MFA in Studio Art is a three-year program centered on critical creative practice, supported by the resources of a research university, production facilities, and spacious studios, set in a scenic environment near campus.

Fees
Tuition (international)For the 2025 fall semester, non-New York State residents (international students) can expect tuition around $34,560.00, plus a Medical Student Activity Fee of $45.00, a Total Comprehensive Fee of $1,411.01, a Clinical Skills Fee of $650.00. There is also a mandatory Student Health Insurance plan cost of $2,389.74 for Fall 2025, or $3,311.26 for Spring/Summer 2026. The total estimated semester tuition and fees for non-residents is $39,055.75. Note that tuition and fees are subject to change.

Living—
The Comprehensive Fee includes Academic Excellence & Success Fee, College Fee, Student Health Services Fee, Technology Fee, Lifetime Career Development Fee, and Transportation Fee. All full-time domestic students are automatically billed for the University Health Insurance plan. International students may be applicable to the International Student Health Insurance. Waivers for the required insurance may be possible if comparable coverage is already held.
How to apply
1. Complete the Graduate School ApplicationApply through the official Graduate School application portal. Ensure you select the correct program (PhD in Art History & Criticism, MA in Art History & Criticism, or MFA in Studio Art).
2. Submit Program-Specific MaterialsFor the MFA in Studio Art, specific materials must be emailed directly to the Department of Art graduate program admissions at GradArt@stonybrook.edu. These include the Artist Portfolio, Statement of Purpose/Artist Statement, and Resume/CV. These documents can also be uploaded to the Graduate School application portal.
3. Prepare Application DocumentsEnsure all required documents are prepared according to the specifications. For the MFA, this includes a PDF Artist Portfolio (max 25 MB) with up to 20 images, a Statement of Purpose/Artist Statement (500-1000 words), and a Resume/CV. Video and durational media for the portfolio should be hyperlinked.
