History of the University of Central Oklahoma

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is one of the state's oldest higher education institutions, founded in 1890 as the Territorial Normal School. Initially operating as a normal school offering two years of college work and a preparatory program, it has evolved into a thriving metropolitan university. Over its history, UCO has undergone several name changes and achieved significant milestones, including being authorized to grant bachelor's degrees and later master's degrees. The university has a rich history marked by the construction of its first building, Old North Tower, and has continuously expanded its offerings and campus facilities. UCO has also been recognized for its commitment to sustainability, becoming the first major Oklahoma university to be powered entirely by wind energy, and has been celebrated for academic achievements and community contributions.
