History with French MA (Hons)

This program combines the study of social, cultural, and political history from the early modern period to the present day with the study of the French language. You will explore history with a focus on the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and India. The program emphasizes practical historical research, using primary sources from the outset, including written materials, maps, visual media, films, art, and music. You will critically analyze key historical debates and consider how historians shape public understanding. You will also develop research skills through working with physical and online archives, including palaeography and database analysis. French language modules are studied each semester, catering to both beginners and those with prior knowledge. The program offers opportunities for study abroad, enhancing both your historical knowledge and French language proficiency.
