This Master of Arts (MA) in Design: Expanded Practice is a post-disciplinary program for practitioners looking to explore the evolving nature of design. The program aims to transform your practice into a critical and social undertaking, challenging traditional design roles and methods. You will become part of a community of practice focused on how design can address and affect change in contemporary society. Whether your background is in traditional design fields like graphic or fashion design, or in areas such as social science, engineering, or business, you are encouraged to examine your own practice through a critical lens. The MA is structured around thematic 'Studios' that allow you to focus on specific areas of investigation within the broader field of design.
The MA runs for 15 months over five 10-11 week terms, delivered through a combination of project briefs, workshops, seminars, and independent study. The program emphasizes experimental and exploratory design processes. You will engage in individual and group projects, external industry briefs, and wider design research themes. The curriculum is composed of three interconnected modules: Studio Expanded Practice (120 credits), Design Transfocality (60 credits), and Extended Study (30 credits).
Applicants are required to state their first and second choice of Studio in their application.
