The Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) in Literacy at Baldwin Wallace University is designed for teachers who want to enhance their skills in evaluating and instructing literacy, specifically focusing on diagnostic and corrective reading methods. Please note that as of May 13, 2026, this program is no longer admitting new students as a major. However, current students will receive full support to complete their degrees, and coursework in this area will continue to be integrated into other academic offerings at BW.
Curriculum
The MAEd in Literacy curriculum focuses on advanced instructional and evaluation methods for reading, preparing educators to meet the needs of diverse learners. Alongside core literacy courses, students will complete a research course and select electives from other MAEd specializations. Please note that the Ohio-mandated 12-hour reading core requirement must be completed before enrollment, and transcripts will be reviewed to determine if additional courses are needed.

2. Provide Official College/University TranscriptsRequest official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities to be sent directly to Baldwin Wallace University. 3. Credential Evaluation for International DegreesIf your bachelor's degree was earned outside the United States, you must have a course-by-course evaluation with degree verification completed by an approved credential evaluation service (Education Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, SpanTran, or World Education Services (WES)). This evaluation must be sent directly to BW from the service.
4. Submit English Proficiency Scores (if required)If English is your second language, you may be required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Minimum requirements are TOEFL IBT 79 (CBT 213, PBT 550) or IELTS composite 6.5.
5. Obtain Two RecommendationsProvide two recommendations from principals, supervisors, teachers, or other professionals who can evaluate your background and potential for graduate study. Use the recommendation form within the online applicant portal. Teachers employed by BW school partnership program districts only need one recommendation.
6. Verify Teaching Certificate or LicenseThe admission committee will verify your teaching certificate or licensure history with the Ohio Department of Education after your application is submitted.
