Entry requirements
Bachelor's degreeA Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university or its foreign equivalent is required. The degree can be in any subject. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in prior academic work is necessary. Exceptional cases may be considered for conditional admission with a GPA below 3.0. The program also considers the rigor and trend of prior coursework, post-undergraduate work, professional experience, the quality of the personal statement and essay, and the strength of letters of recommendation.
TOEFL/IELTSMinimum score requirements are available on the Graduate Admissions website. Official scores must be sent directly to Stony Brook (code 2548).
GRE scores are waived for the 2026 admissions cycle.

Tuition (international)Non-New York State Resident Tuition: $34,560.00 per year. This does not include the Medical Student Activity Fee ($45.00), Total Comprehensive Fee ($1,411.01), Medical Student Health Insurance ($2,389.74 for Fall 2025), or Clinical Skills Fee ($650.00).

How to apply
1. TranscriptsSubmit unofficial transcripts (uploaded by you) and official transcripts (sent directly from your institution via e-transcript to gradadmissions@stonybrook.edu or as a physical mail if necessary). International students should review specific transcript guidelines for international applicants.
2. Statement of Purpose/Personal StatementUpload a personal statement of 750–1,250 words addressing your motivation for pursuing the MA in Public Policy, relevant personal, academic, or professional experiences, and your future professional goals with the degree. Focus on your ability to approach graduate-level work using creativity, critical thinking, analysis, and research.
3. ResumeInclude relevant previous and current work experience. If direct experience is limited, include relevant research, volunteer, or internship experience demonstrating your interest in public policy.
4. Letters of RecommendationSubmit three letters of recommendation. Academic letters are preferred, but non-academic letters will be considered. Recommenders will receive an email with a link to upload their letters directly. Do not email letters to the department.
5. Test Scores/Proof of Permanent ResidencyGRE scores are waived for the 2026 admissions cycle. If your undergraduate education was not in English, submit TOEFL/IELTS scores directly to Stony Brook (code 2548). Proof of Permanent Residency status, if applicable, is also required.
6. Application FeePay the $100 non-refundable application fee online by credit card. Fee waivers are only granted if you meet the Graduate School's specific requirements.
