This Master's program is a logical continuation of the third year of the Social Sciences Bachelor's degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Strasbourg. It offers a deep specialization in ethnology and social anthropology while encouraging an interdisciplinary approach with other social sciences and sciences. The program aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge in social sciences, particularly in ethnology and anthropology. You will gain insights into their objects of study, history, themes, theoretical currents, ongoing debates, cultural areas, qualitative and quantitative research methods, and modern ethnographic fieldwork techniques. This will enable you to thoughtfully shape your academic and professional path.
The program is structured over two years, with each year divided into two semesters. It includes core units focusing on fundamental knowledge, thematic and regional specializations, professional development through research introduction, and prerequisite courses.
Graduates can pursue numerous career paths. These include research positions in fundamental or applied research (e.g., at CNRS, IRD, CIRAD), academic careers as lecturer-researchers, roles in teaching and training, and positions within public service through competitive examinations. The program also prepares students for work in social and cultural mediation, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), journalism and audiovisual production (documentary filmmaking), international organizations as research or project officers, and in roles focused on social, cultural, or heritage issues. Further opportunities exist in consulting firms (communication, marketing, advertising), local government (municipalities, regional councils), qualitative research in various social and socio-ecological fields, social and cultural sectors, human resources, publishing, the associative sector, documentation, and cultural services. Some graduates may also find roles in design (often combined with applied arts studies) and in the art market and heritage professions.
