The Master of Arts in Teaching Foreign Languages (MATFL) program at Stony Brook University is designed to prepare individuals to become certified teachers of Spanish, Italian, or French in New York State secondary schools (grades 7-12). This program is suitable for those with limited prior education coursework or teaching experience. The MATFL is a collaborative effort between the School of Professional Development and the university's language and cultural studies departments. The French track is also available online.
Curriculum
The program requires 47 credits, divided into Language, Literature and Culture (15 credits), Professional Studies in Education (26 credits), and Supervised Student Teaching (6 credits). All requirements must be completed within five years of admission.

Careers
Upon successful completion of the MATFL program, graduates are eligible for New York State teacher certification, qualifying them to teach Spanish, Italian, or French in grades 7-12. The program includes preparation for required state certification exams.

Entry requirements
Undergraduate DegreeMust have completed an undergraduate degree with at least 36 credits in the content field, equivalent to Stony Brook's undergraduate program.
Students must achieve a minimum spoken proficiency rating of Advanced-Low on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) before student teaching. A grade of B or better is required in all pedagogy and foundation courses, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
