The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Science program at Stony Brook University is designed to prepare individuals with little to no prior education coursework for New York State certification as secondary school teachers (grades 7-12) in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics. This collaborative program involves both the academic science departments and the School of Professional Development. Students will gain deep subject-matter expertise from prestigious faculty in their chosen science field while also completing essential professional education courses. The program offers an optional extension for grades 5-6 and may qualify students for a General Science Extension for grades 7-12. All coursework must be completed within five years of admission.
Curriculum
The MAT program consists of 44 credits, divided into graduate science courses, professional studies in education, and supervised student teaching. A written project approved by the sponsoring department is also required.
