The Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) program at UBC's School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) equips students with essential theories, skills, and critical thinking abilities to address contemporary planning challenges. It focuses on issues like climate change, social justice, building resilient communities, and decolonizing planning practices. The program is designed to be intensive and professionally oriented, fostering well-rounded graduates who can act as agents of equitable change in a rapidly evolving world. SCARP aims to transform knowledge into action through planning in partnership to improve lives, communities, and both built and natural environments.
The MCRP program features an innovative curriculum that combines faculty expertise with insights from practicing planners. It addresses a wide range of planning sub-fields, integrating them into a transdisciplinary examination of creating healthy communities. The curriculum emphasizes a blend of theory and practice, applying coursework to real-world problems through intensive partnerships with community, municipal, and private-sector organizations.
English proficiency test results must be from within the last 24 months. The GRE is not required. Applicants must submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study and two letters of reference. A statement of interest is also required. Do not contact faculty for thesis supervision as this is a course-based program.
All fees are subject to change. In case of discrepancies, the UBC Calendar entry is considered correct. An application fee and a deposit to accept an offer are also required.
The MCRP program is accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).
