The Masters of Science in Automated Science: Biological Experimentation (MSAS) program at Carnegie Mellon University provides comprehensive training in designing, implementing, and applying automation in scientific research. This program focuses on the emerging field of Automated Science, which integrates robotic scientific instruments with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. Students will learn to build predictive models from experimental data and select new experiments for improvement, working with faculty from the top-ranked School of Computer Science. The GRE is not required for admission. Waivers for the English proficiency test are not issued, regardless of prior English-language education or study in the U.S. Expired TOEFL scores may be accepted if a degree was recently completed in the United States and an official score report with applicant's picture can be presented.
Tuition is charged per academic year. The estimated living costs include student activities fee, housing, food, books and supplies, personal/miscellaneous expenses, travel allowance, transportation fee, technology fee, and estimated loan fees. Health insurance costs are TBD. These figures are as of April 3, 2026, for the 2026-2027 academic year.
A strong undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, or Biomedical Engineering is recommended, along with college-level coursework in life sciences, statistics, and programming. Experience with algorithms and data structures is ideal. A TOEFL iBT score of at least 100 is required if English is not your native language.
