This is a 5-month intensive design minor offered by HKU Design, focusing on spatial design challenges. You will engage in research-driven design projects, exploring concepts within interior design, architecture, and urban contexts. The minor encourages curiosity and an open mindset, inviting you to investigate the unknown and integrate diverse perspectives into your spatial designs. You'll work in a studio environment with access to various workshops and labs, developing your ideas through hands-on making and research. The program emphasizes a holistic approach, considering physical, material, technical, emotional, human, and social factors in design. You will learn to visualize your concepts using spatial studies, models, installations, collages, and interactive techniques, culminating in a final exhibition and presentation. The goal is to develop a deep understanding of spatial design, refine your design process, and enhance your ability to articulate and present your vision.
Curriculum
The minor is structured around sequential phases with interim feedback. You'll work approximately 40 hours per week, with 8-16 hours of guided study time weekly. The program involves studio work, workshop activities, and external excursions. Collaboration with peers and learning from each other are key components.

Entry requirements
Previous study in art or designStudents from various art and design programs, both domestic and international, are welcome. Affinity with spatial design is expected. Study level is equivalent to HBO Bachelor year 3 or 4.
Selection is based on a portfolio of previous projects, a motivation letter, and an interview. The focus is on assessing the match with the minor's objectives and your ambition to explore the spatial domain. Independent work ethic is essential.
