The MRes Visual Cultures is designed for students who have completed advanced study in art history and theory and wish to further develop their research skills before potentially pursuing a PhD. It offers a challenging and flexible programme exploring contemporary visual culture through various theoretical perspectives, examining global visual culture in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. This degree not only qualifies you for higher research but also stands as a degree in its own right, allowing you to tailor it to your specific interests. The programme encourages an in-depth investigation into the connections between critical theory and diverse visual practices.
Curriculum
The MRes Visual Cultures comprises a taught programme with two core modules and engagement with the wider research community. Students will develop advanced research skills and explore specific areas of interest within visual culture.

Entry requirements
Undergraduate DegreeNormally at least upper second class standard in a relevant subject. Consideration may be given to candidates without a degree or with unrelated degrees if they have relevant experience and demonstrate ability to work at postgraduate level.
IELTS6.5 overall with 6.5 in writing and no element lower than 6.0
Alternative English language qualifications are accepted. Goldsmiths offers English language preparation courses for postgraduate study.

Living—
Fees are for the 2026/2027 academic year. International students may not be able to study part-time on a student visa. Additional costs for stationery, photocopying, and potential field trips or specialist materials may apply. Refer to programme specification for details.
