
This MEng program focuses on designing, building, and operating marine vehicles, with a specialisation in high-performance leisure and commercial craft such as yachts and fast ferries. You will gain core skills in ship design, construction, and operation, combined with advanced knowledge of materials and technology. The course covers fundamental principles of naval architecture, including buoyancy, stability, hydrodynamics, and structural analysis, progressing to sophisticated design tools and techniques. Students will have opportunities for international work placements and access to advanced facilities like a towing/wave tank and a racing yacht.
The MEng program is structured over five years, with a common core in the first two years allowing for flexibility. Years 3 and 4 delve into advanced subjects and specialised projects, culminating in a comprehensive individual project in the final year. Work placements are encouraged during summer holidays.
Graduates are prepared for careers in designing, building, and operating marine vehicles, with a focus on high-performance craft. Opportunities exist in various sectors of the maritime industry, including yacht design, commercial vessel engineering, and research.
Second-year entry is available for suitably qualified students.
Tuition fees for international students are subject to a scholarship for September 2026 entry.
Accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and Royal Institution of Naval Architects, jointly on behalf of the Engineering Council, for purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. (NAOME programmes are accredited up to and including academic year 2025/26. Re-accreditation for the period 2026/27 to 2030/31 is currently in progress.)
International tuition fees receive a 15% reduction through the Faculty of Engineering International Scholarship for self-funded, international (non-EU) undergraduate students starting in September 2026.
