This PhD studentship focuses on understanding the role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), specifically microRNAs (miRNAs), in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PNETs). These molecules are crucial for regulating gene transcription, and their function in PNETs is not well understood. There is a significant clinical need for improved PNET screening, diagnosis, and targeted therapies, especially as the cancer is often diagnosed at a metastatic stage. This project will combine computational analysis with laboratory experiments. The research will identify key miRNAs in PNETs, map their associated biological pathways, and explore their potential as disease biomarkers. The study will involve examining miRNA expression in PNET cell lines derived from patients, as well as in extracellular vesicles from patient blood samples and existing online data. Genomic tools will be employed to investigate the expression of crucial proteins after manipulating miRNA levels in PNET cells. This research aims to contribute valuable insights into the mechanisms driving PNET development and potentially identify new avenues for diagnosis and treatment.

The studentship covers tuition and bench fees for 3 years. A bursary is provided equivalent to the UKRI national minimum stipend plus fees (current 2024/25 rate: £19,237 p.a.).
