This course provides a practical introduction to the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), covering common problems and their solutions. You will gain hands-on programming experience while tackling these challenges. The course is structured around four key areas: fundamental NLP concepts, processing of words, syntactic analysis, and semantic/pragmatic understanding.
Curriculum
The course covers the following topics:
- Course Content
- Basic concepts in NLP, automata theory, mathematical linguistics, probability theory, machine learning, and evaluation metrics (correctness, precision, recall).
- Processing of words: corpora, corpus annotation, finite-state methods for segmentation and morphological analysis, and statistical language modeling with n-gram Markov models.
- Syntax: Part-of-speech tagging, chunking/partial parsing using machine learning or finite-state technology, formal grammars (feature-based, probabilistic context-free grammars), and syntactic parsing.
- Semantics and Pragmatics: Lexical semantics, lexica, WordNet, FrameNet, word sense disambiguation with machine learning, and text classification with machine learning.

Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
