This graduate course, offered by the School of Computing, is designed for postgraduate students who have no prior programming background. It aims to provide a strong foundation in programming principles before students move on to more advanced topics. The course will guide you through the fundamentals of structured programming using an industrial-strength object-oriented programming language. You will learn to think computationally, understand how computer programs execute, and develop essential problem-solving skills. This includes designing algorithms, writing, testing, and debugging code. The course also covers the use of standard data structures like lists, trees, and hash tables, and introduces basic concepts of algorithmic complexity analysis.
The course focuses on developing core programming skills and understanding computational thinking.
Students previously enrolled in or who have completed COMP1110, COMP1140, COMP6710, or are enrolled in the Master of Computing (Advanced) cannot enrol. A permission code from the School of Computing is required.
Fees are for the academic year indicated and are subject to annual indexing. The unit value for this course is 12 units.
For international fee-paying students, the tuition for the 2026 academic year is $14,040. This fee is subject to annual indexing.
Students are expected to have a mathematics background equivalent to ACT Mathematical Methods or NSW HSC Mathematics Advanced. A permission code from the School of Computing is required for enrollment.
To enroll in COMP7710, students who are not eligible to enroll directly must contact the School of Computing to request a permission code.
