This Master of Arts program focuses on the design and communication of real and virtual spaces and environments. You will learn to tell stories and convey messages through the design of stages, exhibition spaces, and public areas. The program explores how to create engaging cross-media exhibition spaces, narrative qualities in film and theatre, and the potential of public space design for societal development. It is a project-oriented, bilingual program offered with a predominantly German or English-speaking focus, allowing for specializations in exhibition, museum, public art, and stage design.
The curriculum is structured around project-based learning, with a focus on conceptualization, design, and realization. Management skills are also integrated into the program. The first year builds foundational knowledge, while the second year focuses on project realization and the Master's thesis.
Graduates are prepared for roles in various fields, including directing, project management, and leadership, either as employees or self-employed professionals. The Master's degree also serves as a foundation for doctoral studies through cooperative promotion programs.
An aptitude assessment (Artistic-Creative Suitability) is also required, which involves a two-stage process. Applications for the aptitude assessment must be submitted by May 15 for the winter semester and December 15 for the summer semester.
Tuition fees are not specified for this program. Students may need to cover their living costs in Dortmund.
Applicants need a Bachelor's degree with 210 ECTS in fields like Design, Architecture, Urban Planning, or comparable areas. If your Bachelor's has 180 ECTS, an additional 30 ECTS can be gained through a 20-week internship or project work during the Master's.
For the German-focused track, you need German proficiency at DSH-2, TestDaF (16 points), or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule. For the English-focused track, C1 level English (CEFR) or equivalent is required.
The application deadline for the artistic-creative suitability assessment is May 15 for the winter semester and December 15 for the summer semester.
The program has two start dates: the winter semester begins in October, and the summer semester begins in April. Enrollment is possible for both semesters after passing the aptitude assessment.
Graduates are prepared for roles in Art Direction, Exhibition Curation, Theatre and Set Design, Film and Media Production, and Virtual Space Design. The Master's degree also serves as a foundation for doctoral studies through cooperative promotion programs.
