The University Foundation Course (UFC) at The American University in London is designed for international students who need to improve their English language proficiency before commencing a degree program. This course aims to elevate your English to an operational level, equipping you with the language and study skills necessary for academic success at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It offers a comprehensive preparation, focusing on grammar, written and spoken English, listening comprehension, presentation skills, advanced reading, and idiomatic English. Additionally, you will receive practical support in study skills and cultural awareness to build your confidence for academic challenges. The course emphasizes communication and personal effectiveness, incorporating basic computer skills and an introduction to word processing with access to the AUL Computer Centre. Learning takes place in small, interactive groups, fostering a supportive and participatory environment. Teaching methods are diverse, including tutorials, workshops, guided reading, study visits, and independent study. Upon successful completion, students receive the AUL Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and are automatically eligible for admission to their chosen degree program at AUL. Students also have the opportunity to take the IELTS examination.
The UFC is taught over two semesters, focusing on essential language and study skills for academic pursuits.
A good level of English is required. The minimum score for IELTS is 5.5 and for TOEFL is 500.
