You will bring your own item to the class to work on, and the teaching will be tailored to the specific techniques required for your project. Whether you're a complete beginner or have some experience, you'll receive step-by-step guidance to bring your furniture back to life. The course is structured around individual projects, allowing you to focus on the techniques relevant to your chosen piece. Beginners are advised to start with smaller items like a dining chair or footstool, while more experienced students can tackle more complex projects under the tutor's guidance. You'll also have the chance to learn from observing demonstrations given to other students, broadening your understanding of various upholstery methods.

Curriculum

The course covers a range of essential upholstery skills. You will learn through practical application on your own project, with demonstrations and guidance from the tutor. There are no formal exams, but students are encouraged to document their progress with notes and photographs. Key skills learned include: - Using basic upholstery tools (mallet, ripping chisel, staple remover, webbing stretcher, magnetic hammer, pneumatic stapler). - Safe removal of old upholstery and preparation for rebuilding. - Measuring, cutting, and applying foam and calico. - Selecting and fitting top cover fabric to a high standard. - Understanding different springing systems and traditional stitching techniques. - Pattern matching and creating cutting plans for fabric.
