This course delves into the historical background and current critical issues facing sustainable urban and regional planning in the Global South. It addresses the immense pressures of rapid urbanization and urban-rural dynamics, examining how these impact social, cultural, environmental, and economic development. The course also explores the challenges posed by informal settlements and economies, and how these affect both official planning systems and the daily lives of residents. It will critically discuss theoretical perspectives on planning in these contexts, including large-scale modernistic ideas and alternative approaches that emphasize local practices and knowledge.
