IU Internationale Hochschule is Germany's largest private university, offering over 250 online programmes in English and German. It provides flexible, affordable, and internationally recognised degrees with study options available from anywhere in the world.
IU Internationale Hochschule (IU International University of Applied Sciences) is Germany's largest private university and one of Europe's fastest-growing higher-education institutions, founded in 1998 in Bad Honnef and now headquartered in Erfurt. IU offers more than 250 state-recognised Bachelor's and Master's programmes spanning business, technology, health, design, law, and social sciences, delivered predominantly online with optional on-campus study formats. Its flexible, digitally-native model lets students study at their own pace from anywhere in the world, with 24/7 online exams and AI-assisted learning tools. IU is accredited by FIBAA and holds system accreditation from the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat), ensuring its degrees are recognised across Europe and internationally.
As a primarily online university, IU fosters community through a digital campus, virtual study groups, and an active student app. Students attend optional on-site events, networking days, and examination centres across Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, and more). IU runs a global partner network for semester-abroad exchanges, giving online students a chance to experience campus life internationally.
Promotional discounts frequently available. Prior learning and work experience can be recognised for ECTS credit (EUR 30/credit), reducing programme length and cost.
System-accredited by the German Accreditation Council (Akkreditierungsrat); programme-level accreditation by FIBAA. Degrees are state-recognised in Germany.
Non-EU/EEA students must obtain a national student visa (Type D) before arrival and then convert it to a student residence permit at the local Foreigners’ Authority (Ausländerbehörde). To prove financial self-sufficiency, most applicants open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) holding €11,904 — €992 per month for twelve months — an amount in effect since 2024 and unchanged for 2026. The blocked account caps monthly withdrawals at €992 so the funds last the year.
Non-EU international students may work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per calendar year without approval from the Federal Employment Agency — an allowance raised from the previous 120/240-day limit under the 2024 skilled-immigration reform. A shift of more than four hours counts as a full day. Student-assistant roles at the university (Hiwi positions) generally fall outside this cap, and hours during semester breaks count toward the same annual allowance.
After completing a degree at a German university, non-EU graduates are entitled to an 18-month residence permit to seek work under the Residence Act, during which any employment is allowed. Separately, the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), introduced in June 2024, lets qualifying non-EU nationals enter to look for work for up to a year using a points system, with limited part-time work permitted. Recent German graduates qualify for the 18-month post-study permit directly, without the points test.
Approximate all-in student budget; major cities run higher.
