This Bachelor of Arts program offers a unique opportunity to achieve fluency in both Serbian/Croatian and Dutch, while also gaining a deep understanding of the history, culture, and geopolitics of the regions where these languages are spoken. Taught jointly by UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS), this degree encourages comparative and intercultural approaches to the humanities. You will explore a wide range of modules covering literature, linguistic traditions, history, sociology, philosophy, art, and film, allowing you to tailor your studies to your specific interests. The program is designed for motivated students with a genuine passion for languages and cultures, and no prior knowledge of Serbian/Croatian or Dutch is required. Curriculum
The program is structured over four academic years. The first two years at UCL focus on developing productive and receptive language skills, alongside a comprehensive understanding of the literature, cinema, politics, linguistics, history, culture, and society of the countries associated with your chosen languages. The third year involves a compulsory year abroad, split between two countries where your chosen languages are spoken, allowing for immersive study at a partner university or an approved work placement. The final year returns to UCL for advanced-level modules and the option of a dissertation.
