This Bachelor of Arts degree offers a unique opportunity to become fluent in Finnish while gaining in-depth knowledge of Finnish history, culture, and geopolitics. Concurrently, you will develop excellent Italian language skills and explore the literature, history, and culture of Italy. Taught collaboratively by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS), this program encourages comparative and intercultural approaches to the humanities. You can select from a wide array of modules covering literature, linguistics, history, sociology, philosophy, art, and film, all related to the cultures of the languages you are studying. The curriculum spans four academic years. The first two years focus on developing language proficiency in both Finnish and Italian, alongside cultural studies modules. In the third year, you will spend a compulsory year abroad, divided between Finland and Italy (or countries where these languages are spoken), potentially studying at partner universities or undertaking an approved work placement. The final year at UCL allows for advanced-level modules in language, applied language (such as translation), literature, history, film, and linguistics. A dissertation module is available for those wishing to conduct an independent research project. This program is ideal for motivated students with a strong interest in languages and cultures.
