
The 'Grid Forming Inverters – Principles and Praxis' module is designed for engineers seeking to deepen their understanding of grid-forming inverter technologies, essential for the future expansion of renewable energy. This master's level course systematically covers fundamental aspects and state-of-the-art developments in this field. It addresses how electronic converters will contribute to stabilizing electricity grids by maintaining voltage and frequency, with a focus on virtual synchronous machines. The module provides a comprehensive overview of power electronics topologies, control of virtual synchronous machines, inertia emulation, and coordination with energy storage. You will also explore topics like minimizing grid errors, stability analysis, and active attenuation of power oscillations. Delivered by world-leading researchers, the course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design and manage stable power grids with high penetration of renewable energy.
The module covers fundamental aspects and state-of-the-art within grid-adapted inverter technologies, with teaching provided by world-leading researchers from Aalborg University's Department of Energy.

The tuition fee for the 'Grid Forming Inverters – Principles and Praxis' module is 15,000 DKK for all students. Please note that living costs such as meals are not included in this fee.
This is a 3-month module. The application deadline for the Fall semester start (2026) is August 15, 2026, with the module running from October to December 2026. Applications for the Spring semester start (2027) have a portal opening date of September 15, 2026.
To be eligible, you need a relevant Bachelor’s degree in an electrical field, at least two years of relevant work experience, and prior knowledge of synchronous machines, power electronics, and feedback regulation.
The module covers fundamental aspects and state-of-the-art developments in grid-forming inverter technologies. Topics include basic power electronics topologies, control of virtual synchronous machines, inertia emulation, stability analysis, and minimizing grid errors.
