The Individualized Studies Program at Columbia College is designed for students who have a specific career goal that isn't directly met by existing majors. This program empowers you to create your own unique course of study by combining two or more academic disciplines. You will develop a detailed proposal outlining how your chosen combination of subjects will help you achieve your professional objectives, demonstrating creativity and initiative that is highly valued by employers.

ProposalA detailed proposal is required, including a title, definition of your field of study, course list, personal statement, and references.

Students typically apply for admission toward the end of their first year. The program also considers applications from upper-class students and transfer students from other institutions.

How to apply

1. ConsultationDiscuss your interest in the Individualized Studies Program with your academic advisor and the Director of Individualized Studies.

2. Proposal DevelopmentComplete a detailed proposal for admission. This proposal should include a title, a definition of your chosen field of study, a list of intended courses, a personal statement, and acknowledgments.

3. Committee ReviewSubmit your proposal for consideration by the Curriculum Committee, who will then decide on your admission to the Individualized Studies program.
