The MA Linguistics with a Specialisation in Phonology is a research-focused Master's program for students with a strong background in linguistics who wish to concentrate on phonology. It provides intensive training in research methodologies and the scholarly presentation of ideas, preparing students for advanced study and research in the field. You will learn how to formulate research questions, critically evaluate literature, develop and test hypotheses, and produce well-structured research reports. This program is ideal for those interested in the study of sound systems in language, exploring how sounds are organized and used to create meaning. It is particularly suited for students who have already undertaken significant study in linguistics, including phonetics and theoretical phonology. If you have less prior experience in linguistics, the general MA Linguistics program might be a better fit.
The MA program consists of a compulsory dissertation on phonology, three core optional modules focusing on phonology, and two optional modules from a broader selection of linguistics subjects. Students can also choose three elective modules for further specialization. Part-time students complete the same modules over two years, with the dissertation in the second year.
This MA is an excellent preparation for doctoral research in phonology and equips graduates with advanced research skills. Graduates have a strong track record of securing funded PhDs at UCL and other global universities. The program also develops transferable skills such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, project management, and communication, opening doors to careers outside academia.
Applicants with less prior experience in formal linguistics or phonology may be better suited for the general MA Linguistics program. Equivalent qualifications for international students are available on the International Students website by selecting your country.
Fees are subject to change. Please check the UCL website for the most up-to-date information.
For the 2026/27 academic year, the tuition fee for international students is £35,400 for full-time study and £17,700 for part-time study. Please check the UCL website for the most up-to-date fee information.
The programme has a full-time duration of 1 year. Part-time study is also available, typically completed over two years.
You need a minimum of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. Applicants with less prior experience in linguistics or phonology may be better suited for the general MA Linguistics program.
Applications are submitted online through the UCL system. The application window for applicants requiring a visa is from October 20, 2025, to June 30, 2026. Ensure you check country-specific entry requirements and gather necessary documents such as academic transcripts and proof of English proficiency.
This MA prepares students for doctoral research in phonology and equips them with advanced research skills. Graduates have secured funded PhDs and pursued careers in areas such as language teaching, speech technology, marketing, and journalism.
