
This is a 4-year PhD position focused on seismology, aiming to develop and apply advanced seismic methods for exploring and monitoring geothermal resources. The program is a collaborative international project between the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands and the HUN-REN EPSS Kövesligethy Radó Seismological Observatory in Hungary. The research will combine expertise in waveform analysis and earth structure imaging from ITC with operational seismology and geothermal resource characterization from EPSS. This offers an interdisciplinary environment with a strong cross-border research network. The project involves developing and integrating multiple seismological methods to enhance geothermal reservoir imaging, exploration, and monitoring. Key areas of focus include ambient seismic noise tomography for detailed subsurface imaging, receiver function analysis for crustal structure, earthquake detection and location using both classical and machine-learning approaches, and seismic anisotropy analysis to assess deformation and stress regimes. The work also includes field deployments, seismic station operation, extensive data processing, and methodological development, with opportunities to engage in ongoing research at both institutions.
