BSc Hons Mathematics
Mathematics is a foundational subject for science and technology. This BSc Hons program will teach you to see the beauty and applicability of mathematics in various aspects of life, from natural patterns to architectural design. You will learn how mathematical principles can be used to address societal challenges in fields like medicine, social care, energy, and climate change, opening up diverse career paths. The program fosters a collaborative learning environment where you'll engage with deep thinkers to solve problems and explore theories.
The three-year program starts with core mathematical methods and concepts through lectures and workshops. In the first year, you will study four core and two optional modules, covering topics such as multivariable calculus, probability, statistics, logic, proofs, and theorems. The second year deepens your knowledge in analysis, algebra, probability, and statistics, introducing individual and group projects to build research and employment skills. In the final year, you will choose six optional modules to specialize in areas like cryptography, graph theory, medical statistics, abstract algebra, or topology, tailoring your studies to your career aspirations.
Throughout the course, you will develop essential transferable skills including data analysis, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning, making you attractive to employers. Collaborative work, presentations, and research communication will enhance these skills. The School of Mathematical Sciences offers support through weekly workshops, problem-solving classes, and one-to-one sessions. For extracurricular engagement, the MathSoc hosts a weekly Maths Cafe providing academic support and a casual space for students.
