Regional Planning
The Regional Planning program at UMass Amherst equips you with the skills to address complex physical, economic, and social challenges in towns, cities, and broader regions. You will learn to develop large-scale solutions by integrating theoretical, historical, social, political, and technical aspects of planning practice. The department focuses on creating sustainable solutions, with notable expertise in greenway planning, green infrastructure, and understanding the role of open spaces and communities within their regional context. Faculty research is at the forefront of investigating entrepreneurship, development, technological change, and the adaptive reuse of industrial spaces. The program emphasizes hands-on experience through studio work and community engagement, both locally and globally.
Since the 1960s, our alumni have been influential in various sectors, including government at all levels, private consulting, real estate development, industry, and academia. The department fosters a strong sense of community through student groups, collaborative projects, and alumni networking, ensuring you feel supported throughout your academic journey and in planning your future career. Dual-degree options are available, allowing you to combine a Master of Regional Planning (MRP) with other fields like Landscape Architecture (MLA), Law (JD), Public Policy and Administration (MPPA), Architecture (MARCH), or a Master of Science (MS).
The 4+1 Accelerated Master of Regional Planning program is designed for UMass undergraduates, enabling you to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years. As a 4+1 student, you begin taking graduate courses in your senior year while paying undergraduate tuition rates. Our students produce impactful work that addresses real-world community issues, providing valuable experience and contributing to the field.
