Fine-grained Textual Inversion Network for Zero-Shot Composed Image Retrieval (FTI4CIR)

This research introduces a novel method called the Fine-grained Textual Inversion Network (FTI4CIR) designed for Zero-Shot Composed Image Retrieval (ZS-CIR). Composed Image Retrieval allows users to search for images using a combination of a reference image and a text description that specifies desired modifications. ZS-CIR aims to achieve this without requiring pre-annotated image-text triplets, addressing the challenge of expensive data annotation. The FTI4CIR network addresses limitations in existing ZS-CIR approaches that use a single pseudo-word token to represent an image. This can be too coarse to capture an image's full content. FTI4CIR proposes a more comprehensive approach by mapping an image into multiple textual representations: a subject-oriented pseudo-word token and several attribute-oriented pseudo-word tokens. This fine-grained mapping aims to more accurately represent the image in a textual format. Furthermore, FTI4CIR incorporates a tri-wise caption-based semantic regularization. This component works to align these fine-grained pseudo-word tokens with real-word token embeddings, guided by image captions generated using the BLIP model. The effectiveness of this method has been demonstrated through extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets, showing superior performance.

Finnish and Italian BA

This Bachelor of Arts degree offers a unique opportunity to become fluent in Finnish while gaining in-depth knowledge of Finnish history, culture, and geopolitics. Concurrently, you will develop excellent Italian language skills and explore the literature, history, and culture of Italy. Taught collaboratively by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) and the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS), this program encourages comparative and intercultural approaches to the humanities. You can select from a wide array of modules covering literature, linguistics, history, sociology, philosophy, art, and film, all related to the cultures of the languages you are studying. The curriculum spans four academic years. The first two years focus on developing language proficiency in both Finnish and Italian, alongside cultural studies modules. In the third year, you will spend a compulsory year abroad, divided between Finland and Italy (or countries where these languages are spoken), potentially studying at partner universities or undertaking an approved work placement. The final year at UCL allows for advanced-level modules in language, applied language (such as translation), literature, history, film, and linguistics. A dissertation module is available for those wishing to conduct an independent research project. This program is ideal for motivated students with a strong interest in languages and cultures. It is designed for those eager to explore academic material beyond the standard curriculum and engage with the histories and traditions of Finland and Italy. No prior knowledge of Finnish or Italian is required, but enthusiasm for learning new languages and intercultural work is essential. You will gain the same level of linguistic competence whether you start a language from scratch or already have some knowledge.

The Finnish Doctoral Programme in Oral Sciences (FINDOS-Turku) offers a high-level doctoral training program for students pursuing research in dentistry or oral health-related subjects.
