Musculoskeletal System: Orthopedics, Traumatology, and Prosthetics
This course offers a comprehensive study of the musculoskeletal system, focusing on orthopedics, traumatology, and prosthetics. It covers the main degenerative, inflammatory, and traumatic conditions affecting bones and joints, including an introduction to orthopedic biomechanics. You will explore arthrosic pathologies, inflammatory joint diseases, and bone necroses, as well as degenerative conditions of the spine and soft tissues, and common traumatic injuries. The program also delves into external prosthetics for amputees, stump care, rehabilitation, and the principles of orthotics – external devices designed to correct or support impaired functions. Future perspectives in prosthetic technology are also discussed.
Furthermore, the course provides an introduction to biomaterials. This section details the nature and properties of synthetic and natural materials used to maintain the integrity and comfort of individuals with functional deficiencies or injuries. The objective is to understand how these materials enable the development of assistive devices that can replace damaged organ functions. Topics include the types of biomaterials, polymers, metals, ceramics, and naturally derived materials, along with their applications, benefits, and potential risks in medical contexts.
