Biochemistry and Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Mary Washington offers majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry, both approved by the American Chemical Society. Our programs utilize a modern curriculum supported by well-equipped laboratories that enhance classroom learning. Core courses cover traditional areas of chemistry, including organic, analytical, and physical chemistry. Students will also complete senior capstone projects designed to build laboratory problem-solving skills and improve scientific communication abilities, both written and oral. Biology Major

Biology Minor

The Biology Minor at the University of Mary Washington provides students with a foundational understanding of biological sciences. It complements a variety of majors by offering core knowledge in ecological, evolutionary, cellular, and genetic principles. This minor requires the completion of 22 credit hours in designated BIOL courses, including specific requirements in ecology, evolution, cell biology, and genetics, as well as additional upper-level biology courses, some of which must include a laboratory component.

Business Spanish Minor

The Business Spanish minor is an interdisciplinary program designed for students who want to combine their business or economics studies with Spanish language and Hispanic culture. This minor provides a foundational understanding of business and economics, coupled with the ability to communicate in Spanish within a professional setting. Students are required to complete an internship as part of the program. Approved study abroad courses in Spanish may also count towards the minor. This program requires nine courses (27 credits) beyond Intermediate Spanish II (SPAN 202A). Students pursuing this minor should be aware that they can take no more than 29 credits in Business courses without also declaring a Business Major.

Chemistry Major

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemistry program at the University of Mary Washington provides a comprehensive foundation in chemical principles.
