This doctoral research examines everyday life in early modern Stratford-upon-Avon (1537-1649) by analysing surviving wills and other historical documents. The study specifically uses wills to explore the practice of will-making, kinship structures, emotional connections, and the legal and economic standing of women during this period. By focusing on the experiences of women, the research contributes to a broader understanding of non-elite women in England at the time. The innovative use of Nvivo software helps classify bequests and naming patterns, offering a more nuanced perspective on how people in this era viewed their families, friends, and possessions. The thesis advocates for a comprehensive approach to studying wills, highlighting their complexity and usefulness as historical sources. The findings challenge conventional assumptions about kinship and the financial and legal opportunities available to women of the middling sort in early modern England.

The Work-in-Progress Intensive is an exclusive two-week workshop designed for Yale Writers’ Workshop (YWW) alumni who are developing book-length projects in fiction or nonfiction. This highly competitive program brings together a select cohort of eight writers for a focused and collaborative experience. The first week takes place on campus at Yale, providing an immersive environment for deep creative engagement, including critiquing peers' manuscripts and participating in generative and revision-based activities. The second week continues virtually, allowing participants to sustain momentum, share new work, and receive continued feedback on revision strategies, structural development, and next steps towards a full manuscript. Writing a new society: Aufbau in GDR literature 1949–1962

This approach helps to differentiate between works that conform to socialist realism and those that deviate, offering insights into the potential for diverse political expression within socialist cultural production. The thesis examines texts based on their political and aesthetic conformity, exploring the 'authority trap' faced by intellectuals navigating between state demands and artistic autonomy. The analysis covers various literary forms and authors, including novels about refugees, plays by Inge and Heiner Müller, and experimental poetry. By examining these works, the thesis contributes to scholarship on early GDR literature by highlighting the complex relationship between art, politics, and intellectual life in an authoritarian socialist state.
