Design Innovation MSc

The Design Innovation MSc is an intensive one-year master's program focused on developing impactful product and service solutions that benefit people, places, and the planet. You can choose to follow the core MSc or specialize in Healthcare, Materials, or Events. The course equips you with skills in research, design thinking, ideation, collaboration, and digital tools, often tackling real-world problems related to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Through qualitative and quantitative research, you will identify opportunities and apply sustainable design practices. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, teamwork, process management, and an understanding of business contexts, the circular economy, and prototype evaluation. You will also refine digital skills in UX/UI, product and experience design, utilizing AI tools and developing prototyping skills like 3D printing. Graduates will be highly skilled, ethically driven, and prepared to design sustainable solutions for global challenges. The course is delivered through lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, and studio time, with opportunities for peer-to-peer learning.

Design Internship (DSIGN350)

DSIGN350 Design Internship is a paper designed to integrate design students into a professional environment. During this paper, you will apply your design skills, research methodologies, and production abilities to assigned projects or through an industry placement. This hands-on experience prepares you for the realities of professional design work.

Design M.A.

The Master of Arts in Design is a program focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. It uniquely explores the intersections of different design fields through concrete projects. Students develop the ability to create comprehensive, independent design solutions in communication and/or product design by leveraging interdisciplinary synergies, integrating current professional and social developments. The program emphasizes the strategic importance of design and its potential impact on society, business, science, and culture. Graduates are equipped to develop viable concepts, understand and connect disciplinary interfaces, and lead collaborative, interdisciplinary teams. They will be adept at navigating between communication and space, product and communication, and space and interaction. The program fosters constructive, solution-oriented exchange, preparing students to ethically and socially responsibly shape the future as designers, with a focus on social, ecological, and economic sustainability.

Design Minor

This Design minor program, offered at Hanze University of Applied Sciences through the Minerva Art Academy, is designed for Bachelor's level students interested in a study abroad experience within a vibrant artistic community. You will be integrated into a second-year Design group, becoming part of the regular student body. The program is taught entirely in English and focuses on allowing pro-active art students to deepen their intellectual and artistic development. The minor is an elective course, meaning you can choose it based on your personal interests and objectives from a wide range of design disciplines. The program is structured around the semester system, with one semester equating to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits. Assessment occurs at the end of each semester, with courses graded as either a pass (voldoende) or fail (onvoldoende).

Design of Concrete Structures

This course focuses on the design of reinforced concrete structures, adhering to the Eurocode 2 standards. It covers fundamental principles, including elastic design, partial safety factors, probabilistic design, and failure design. Students will learn to identify design loads, perform structural analysis, and understand material behavior for reinforced concrete. The curriculum delves into the ultimate and serviceability limit states for beams, including reinforcement detailing and shear design. It also covers the design of one-way, two-way, and continuous slabs using simplified methods and introduces the strip method for complex slab designs. Column design, focusing on buckling sensitivity and reinforcement detailing, is also addressed. Finally, the course introduces the strut and tie method for designing elements like walls, foundation blocks, and deep beams.

Design Science PhD and MS Programs

The Design Science program offers both PhD and Master of Science (MS) degrees, focusing on a residential, on-campus learning experience. The program admits students for the Fall term only. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications well in advance of the deadlines to ensure all necessary documentation is included. International MS students are particularly advised to apply by the Early Decision deadline to allow ample time for visa processing. The PhD admissions process involves a collaborative advisor selection, which may take longer than typical PhD admissions. Decisions for PhD candidates are usually made between late February and mid-March. For MS applicants, decisions are typically provided about 8 weeks after the relevant deadline. The university employs a holistic review of applications. Failure to submit a complete application by the final deadline may require re-application for a future term.

Design Technology (M.S.)

The Master of Science in Design Technology program at Cornell offers a multidisciplinary approach to design and computation. With approximately 48 students, the program fosters innovation and transdisciplinary study, encouraging research that bridges science and design. Students work on projects ranging from digital tools and responsive materials to the built environment. The program is STEM-designated, making international graduates eligible for an extended F-1 visa for work in the U.S. The program provides two distinct tracks. The Thesis Research track, based in Ithaca, requires students to develop a comprehensive research plan and form a special committee by the end of their first year. The Studio Professional track, located at Cornell Tech in New York City for the second year, focuses on collaborative studio projects, including Product Studio and options like Startup, BigCo, or PiTech Studio in the spring.

Design Thinking

This course, DSN2100 Design Thinking, introduces students to a designer's approach to creating innovative products and services. The focus is on developing a deep understanding and empathy for users. You will learn a holistic innovation process, from building an initial business case to applying design thinking and creative problem-solving strategies, aiming to make innovation a sustainable practice within any organization or area of interest. This course can be taken as part of several part-time programs offered both on-campus and online.
