Health Professions Program

The University of Central Oklahoma's Health Professions program, within the College of Mathematics and Science, is designed to guide students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, allied health, public health, and other medical fields (excluding nursing). This program advises on course selection and curriculum planning to ensure students complete a baccalaureate degree at UCO and are well-prepared for admission to graduate health professions programs across the United States. Upon admission to UCO and meeting with an academic advisor, students can schedule an appointment with the dedicated Health Professions advisor. The program offers support in finding opportunities for job shadowing, volunteering, graduate exam preparation (MCAT, DAT, GRE), summer research, and involvement in UCO clubs. They also assist with health professions application preparation and host events like a mentorship dinner with practitioners and a career fair with admissions representatives from various health professions programs.

History of the University of Central Oklahoma

The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is one of the state's oldest higher education institutions, founded in 1890 as the Territorial Normal School. Initially operating as a normal school offering two years of college work and a preparatory program, it has evolved into a thriving metropolitan university. Over its history, UCO has undergone several name changes and achieved significant milestones, including being authorized to grant bachelor's degrees and later master's degrees. The STLR Individual Reflection Appointment (SIRA) program at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) offers students a unique opportunity to earn STLR credit for learning experiences that may not have been formally tagged. If you've had experiences that broadened your perspectives in line with UCO's STLR tenets, but they weren't officially designated as STLR-tagged, or if they were a combination of multiple experiences or from outside UCO, you can discuss them with a Transformative Learning evaluator. These free, 50-minute appointments are designed to be a supportive environment where you can articulate your growth and potentially receive STLR credit.
